Gazipaşa is the easternmost district of Antalya. It is approximately 180 km from the city center. Alanya surrounds the west and northwest district, Karaman in the north, Mersin in the east, and the Mediterranean Sea in the south.
The history of Gazipaşa dates back to 2000 BC. The region was the settlement area of the Luwis. It was a branch of the Hittites at that time. Selinus was founded in the region in 628 BC. It was one of the important port cities of the period. The district has been under the rule of the Byzantine Empire, the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, the Anatolian Seljuk State, the Karamanoğulları Principality and the Ottoman Empire throughout history. It has started to be called Selinti because of the frequent floods during the Seljuk period. Atatürk made it a district in 1921 with the name Gazipaşa, and in 1926 the status of the district was abolished due to the low population. Gazipaşa was connected to Mersin until 1948. It gained the status of a district again after that date and was connected to Antalya.
The fertile lands of Gazipaşa offer suitable conditions for the growth of almost all kinds of vegetables and fruits. Grain cultivation is carried out in the red chestnut soils in the inner parts of the district. It is especially famous for its bananas. In recent years, the production of artichokes and strawberries has increased in the district, where greenhouse activities are widely carried out. Livestock and forestry are important sources of income in mountainous and forested areas.
In Gazipaşa, where the effects of the typical Mediterranean climate are felt, maquis plant communities, pine forests, and trees such as cedar, juniper, spruce and larch are common in the higher parts of the district.
The district has a cuisine with the nomadic culture. It is possible to taste special delicacies such as guru keşli çomaç, bulgur pilaf with goat meat, nomadic soup, lamb leg wrap, and pond lake.
Gazipaşa is very rich in terms of ruins and historical ruins. It has a high tourism potential with its untouched natural beauties, interesting geological formations, and 50 km coastline. The district has many convenient beaches for swimming. It draws attention with its fascinating coves hidden among the rocks. In addition, Gazipaşa is one of the rare regions where sea turtles lay their eggs on the Mediterranean coast.
